Insomnia is a disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep or both. With insomnia, you usually awaken feeling drowsy, which ultimately takes a toll on your energy level, mood, work performance, health and overall quality of life. Insomnia can be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, medication side effects and pre-existing medical conditions.
What are the three types of insomnia?
Transient insomnia lasts for less than a week and can be caused by another disorder, changes in sleep environment, timing of sleep, severe depression or by stress
Acute Insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well for a period of less than a month.
Chronic Insomnia lasts for longer than a month. It occurs in people with high levels of stress hormones and those that have shifts in the level of cytokines.
How do we treat insomnia at CNS?
Acupuncture and herbal medicine can stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurochemical messenger molecules. The resulting biochemical changes influence the body’s homeostatic mechanisms, thus promoting physical and emotional well-being and leading to a more restful sleep. With acupuncture, we also focus on providing a relaxing therapy session that can reduce or eliminate anxiety and tension in the body. The therapy also includes deep breathing and progressive relaxation.
